Busy Street

I am sound asleep cozy in my bed, when Angry jerks back the sheet and drags me out of bed by my feet. My head bounces off the floor and I am stunned by the impact. When I look up, she is standin’ over me with what looks like daggers shootin’ out of her eyes. “Today you need to learn to cross a street by yourself.”

We live on Gallatin Street. It is one of the busiest streets in Jackson. I know when she tells me, “You will learn a valuable lesson today,” that it won’t be easy ‘cause she always makes everything hard for me.

She walks over to our closet and pulls out one of my Sunday dresses throwin’ it on the floor beside me. Angry knows it is one of my favorites ‘cause I got to pick it out all by myself.

A few weeks ago I spent the night with my Aunt Lena and the next day we went shoppin’ at Sears & Roebuck. We both loved the white eyelet dress with a blue satin ribbon around the waist. She bought me the dress, a pair of blue, patent leather shoes and a pair of blue and white lacey socks to match the belt. She told me she wanted me to be the prettiest little girl in the Sunday school class, even if I’m not Catholic.

I knew when Angry pulled the dress out of the closet it was payback for me spendin’ time with Aunt Lena without her. I pick the dress up off of the floor and slowly put it on. I walk over to the closet to get my shoes, but she screams, “No shoes or socks.”

I just look at her and walk into the bathroom. I wash my face and take the time to put my hair in a haphazard ponytail before I follow her out of the room.

It’s early in the morning, but it is already a miserable steamy day. I am sweatin’ before we get to the corner. The sidewalk is hot and I’m hoppin’ ‘cause it’s burnin’ my feet. Angry don’t care; she just keeps on walkin’.

We walk past the red light to the corner and then down to the middle of the next block. When she stops, I stand on the grass behind her to cool my red hot feet and she starts countin’ cars as loud as she can. She turns to me and says, “Get over here.”

I walk up next to her, afraid she is goin’ to push me into the street. She counts one hundred cars, and I think, why is she countin’ one hundred cars before we cross the street? But I know better than to ask that question.

When she finishes countin’ the cars, she says, “We are goin’ back to the house.”

I’m confused, but I run off the sidewalk onto the grass and follow her home. When we get there, Angry flops down on the couch and turns on the TV. She tells me she is hungry and yells, “Go fix my lunch, you stupid idiot.
